Graduate Counseling - Application Procedures
  1. Application. Complete all portions of the application form.

  2. Application Fee. Include with your application a one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee. The fee is payable by check, credit card, or debit card. (Not required if paid with a previous IWU application.)

  3. Transcripts. Official transcripts showing the baccalaureate degree conferred and any graduate coursework completed are required. Indiana Wesleyan University will accept for its permanent file only those transcripts sent in a sealed envelope directly to IWU by the registrar of each institution. If the applicant completed less than 30 credit hours at the baccalaureate degree-granting institution, all previous transcripts will be required. Official transcripts must exhibit the official seal and signature of the registrar. Transcripts that are stamped “student copy,” “issued to student,” or “unofficial” cannot be accepted as official.

  4. Test Scores (Master’s Degree applicants only). Applicants should take the General test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Please request a copy of your GRE scores to be sent to Indiana Wesleyan University, Adult Enrollment Services, 1900 West 50th Street, Marion, IN 46953. (The Indiana Wesleyan University institutional code is R1446.) Additional GRE information can be obtained by contacting Educational Testing Services at 609-771-7670, or see www.gre.org.

  5. Recommendation Forms (Master’s Degree and Addictions Counseling Certificate applicants only). Three professional recommendations are required from persons qualified to judge your expertise, character, and capacity for graduate-level learning. At least one recommendation must be from a professor and one from a supervisor/mental health professional. You must use the forms that are provided.

  6. Writing Samples (Master's Degree applicants only): Philosophy of Counseling, Autobiography, and Supplemental Questions
    • Philosophy of Counseling. Each applicant is to complete a statement of his or her counseling philosophy; i.e., describing how your faith will impact your practice. This should be two to five typewritten pages, double-spaced.
    • Autobiography. Please provide a two to five page typewritten autobiography discussing your faith and your life journey.
    • Supplemental Questions. Please answer the following questions. Each answer should be typed, double-spaced, with no more than one page per question. Each answer will be evaluated by the faculty for content, writing style, and writing mechanics.
      1. Why do you want to be a counselor, and what are you planning to do with this degree?
      2. What qualities and strengths do you bring to your clients and to the counseling relationship?
      3. Describe the status of your spiritual/religious life at this time.
      4. What strengths, abilities, and desires do you bring to this graduate program?
      5. Write about an event in your life that was a turning point for you, what you have learned from that experience, and how your life is different today because of it.
      6. Identify and describe a characteristic about yourself with which you are not happy and how you would like that area to change, and identify your plans for changing it.
      7. What counseling models and/or theories currently interest you, and why?
      8. Briefly describe your goals for emotional and interpersonal growth.

  7. Addictions Counseling Certificate Applicants for the Addictions Counseling Certificate must submit a letter clearly stating reason(s) for seeking admission into the program.

  8. Post-Master’s Degree Certificate Applicants for the Post-Master’s Degree Certificate must submit a letter stating the reason for seeking state licensure.
Once all application requirements have been met, your records will be evaluated and you will receive notice of your status from the Graduate Studies in Counseling Admissions Committee. Applicants demonstrating potential for success in the IWU Graduate Studies in Counseling program will be invited for an interview.
