1. What is the difference between the 48 hour degree and the 60 hour degree?
In the state of Indiana, 60 hours is required to become a licensed counselor and 48 hours will simply give someone a MA in Counseling. Due to the variety of licensure laws that exist throughout the United States, students are encouraged to research what the requirements are in the state they would like to practice.
2. How long will it take to complete the program?
Those students who choose to attend classes full time (9-12 credit hours per semester) usually complete the program in 2½-3 years. Students attending part time (6 credit hours per semester) can complete the program in 4-5 years. The length of the program depends upon the students and how many credit hours he or she takes per semester. Students must complete their program of study by 6 years.
3. Do I have to start classes in the fall?
Students are able to start classes fall, spring, or summer.
4. What are the admission deadlines for Fall and Spring?

5. Can I transfer previous graduate work?
Students are able to transfer in up to 9 credits of applicable graduate work. The classes that are accepted for transfer are left to the discretion of the department.

7. Where can I complete my internship?
Internships can be completed at the qualifying location of your choice. Students are encouraged to secure their own internship sites in the area of their interest.
8. How will I know what classes I need to take and the order they should be taken in?
Students are each assigned a faculty advisor that will aid them in determining what classes need to be taken and when.
9. Where is the practicum portion completed for the Marion site? Indianapolis site?
The practicum for the Graduate Counseling Program in Marion is completed at the Graduate Counseling Clinic which is located on the IWU Graduate Studies campus. Students provide free counseling to the surrounding community in exchange for gaining valuable practicum experience.
The practicum for the Graduate Counseling Program in Indianapolis is completed at the IWU Education Center WEST.
10. Is the GRE given at any of the IWU sites?
No, but students can call 800-GRE-CALL or visit www.gre.org to find an exam site nearby.
11. What is the NCE?
The NCE is the National Counselor Examination. By passing the NCE, one is eligible to become a National Certified Counselor. The NCE is the examination that some states use as a requirement for licensure.
12. Will I be a licensed counselor when I graduate?
Yes, School Counselor candidates may obtain their School Counseling License through Indiana Department of Education, by submitting required verification of their credentials. However, MFT and Community candidates will not be licensed upon graduation, but MA in Counseling from Indiana Wesleyan University will prepare you for the 60 hours of education requirements that are necessary for licensure. Those wanting to pursue licensure will need to complete the necessary post graduate hours of practice.
13. Can the degree be completed at the Indianapolis campus?
The Master of Arts in Counseling can be completed in at the Indianapolis Education Center.
14. Are you able to get a dual degree in Counseling?
Yes, students may attain dual degrees by completing requirement for both, and using electives to meet all requirements.
15. Is the program accredited?
The MA in Counseling program at Indiana Wesleyan University is accredited by the Council for Accreditation and Related Education al Programs (CACREP). CACREP is the accrediting arm of the largest association of professional counselors, the American Counseling Association (ACA).
16. What are the financial aid deadlines?
There are no financial aid deadlines, but students are encouraged to complete their FASFA as soon as possible.
17. Are there any scholarships available?
Scholarships are available to full time students entering in the fall. Scholarships are based on academics, servitude, and leadership capabilities. Students must be fully accepted before a scholarship can be awarded. April 1st is the deadline for all scholarship.
